Career match in Latam

A platform designed to align the passions of opportunity youth with digital career opportunities in Colombia.

Summary

The Digi-o project is part of the Global Opportunity Youth Network (GOYN) initiative, aimed at bridging the gap for Opportunity Youth (OY). The primary goal of the project is to create a platform that maps passions, career paths, and available programs, promoting a shared vision of support and empathy for young people.

Solution

The MVP for a mobile website helps young people in Latin America connect their passions with careers and educational programs. Users create profiles and take a fun quiz to identify their interests, leading to personalized career suggestions. The site includes a directory of training programs, a community forum for mentorship, and inspiring resources. With a bright and simple design, this platform, part of the "Mapa de formadores" strategy, aims to empower youth and encourage more sign-ups.

Challenge

Every year, many young people drop out of school after grade 9. They often miss out on getting their bachelor’s degree or starting their careers because they don’t receive the job training they need.

In the U.S. and Europe, there are tools to help young people find careers that match their strengths, but Latin America doesn’t have those resources. Many young people face tough challenges, like money problems and feeling insecure. Some feel they’re not good enough and choose to leave school to earn money instead. Even though the government and organizations are trying to create job opportunities, dropout rates keep going up. There just aren’t enough programs to connect education with available jobs. It’s a tough situation for these young people.

Goals

INCLUSIVE AND FLEXIBLE

Mobile-centric approach

Based on our insights, we noticed that our users prefer mobile devices for their interactions. As a result, we've prioritized a mobile-centric approach in our designs to better meet their needs.

ACCELERATE CAREER RESEARCH

Explore careers and programs

Many young people give up on their career research because of limited information or financial constraints. It's essential to simplify and streamline the process so that it's as easy to navigate as Instagram or TikTok.

ASSESS TO EMPOWER

Discover your career

Deciding what to study can be hard, especially for those who know their strengths. It’s even tougher for Opportunity Youth who lack a supportive environment. Providing them with a system to accurately assess their passions can create a meaningful and inspiring change.

EMPATHY IS THE GOAL

Tailor experiences to make opportunity youth heard

The key insights from our research was to introduce, encourage and enable the youth.

The process

INCLUSIVE & FLUID PROCESS

Ensure everyone is part of the journey

As a non-profit foundation, Digi-o was always aimed to involve young people and experts, specifically in this project, I excel in fostering a collaborative environment that adapts to evolving priorities, all while ensuring flexibility and fluidity in the design process. Stepping as product strategy on defining key epics.

01. Research & Information architecture

I collaborated with a UX Researcher on working on a moderated cardsorting, brainstorming an information architecture diagram, defining the userflow, and shaping the low fidelity wireframes.

02. Wireframing

Co-facilitated wireframing sessions, brainstorming, and architecture definition with a fellow UX researcher. Together, we also moderated usability tests with end-users, allowing us to validate key hypotheses, particularly around structure and navigation.

03. Branding Perception Testing

My goal was to shape a visual design high-end appealing to the youth in Latam. I created 2 moodboards to run a branding perception testing with 10 people. We combined elements from both style tiles to create a balanced range, incorporating violet, fuchsia, and electric blue tones.

04. Visual Design & Prototyping

Contributed to defining the MVP by analyzing data, conducting user interviews, and prioritizing final user needs. I designed multiple prototypes, collaborated closely with peer designers, and led design critique sessions to ensure a cohesive and comprehensive visual design. My goal was to create an aesthetic, modern, and intuitive user interface.

05. Usability Testing

I was fully involved in the usability testing process, defining the script, hypothesis, and metrics. I conducted tests with 10 end-users, synthesized all the results into actionable recommendations, and shared them with stakeholders. This prepared the insights for implementation as part of the first MVP.

06. Development Hand-off

I developed a detailed UI Kit system that includes behaviors, Figma variables, and interaction notes to support seamless integration with front-end development.

Special thanks and credits to my awesome team

Content and taxonomy is crucial

Enhancing the tagging and organization of content is essential for better UX and searchability. Using methods like card sorting or polls can gather user feedback, helping to ensure the organization meets their needs.

Proper documentation for developers

Clear documentation, including interaction guidelines and acceptance criteria, is essential for successful design projects. Better implementation could have been achieved if we had engaged in an iterative process after defining the MVP.

Validate expectations with stakeholders

Establishing clear expectations for roles, responsibilities, and deliverables helps reduce confusion and aligns the team's efforts. This clarity ensures that everyone understands their contributions and deadlines, ultimately leading to a smoother project workflow.
